power to the dream

Today, my toys, figures, and model kits go to storage and I feel kind of sad. Here are photos of them in the boxes I put them in, but also here are the photos of when I first got them. 

While there is nothing like the feeling of being a kid who got a toy as a present, there’s nothing, NOTHING like being able to buy expensive toys for yourself as an adult. I was kind of poor growing up and didn’t get to buy many of the toys I coveted.

It was only when I was already married (no exorbitant wedding to pay for, and having the BEST WIFE IN THE GALAXY), earning a good wage, and not having a kid yet to support when I had the kind of disposable income to gratify myself with toy purchases. Anime DVDs aren’t distributed here in the Philippines, but manga and toys are (remarkable considering most of the shows featuring the toys are often not shown or distributed locally).

So I opened my fan wallet for the toys. 

Alas, I can no longer do this. I have a daughter now, and pretty soon she’ll start walking. Not only does buying expensive toys, video games, and gratuitous gadgets fail to make sense in light of preparing for my daughter’s future (and gratifying her future toy preferences), she poses a clear and present danger to the toys I have on display (and vice-versa).

So, into storage they all go. Someday when she’s a little older and perhaps somehow appreciative of robot anime and their merchandise, it’ll be time to take these all out for display.
