mechadatabaseanimal:

It’s come to our attention that Otaku are described as Database Animals, in that there is a subset of consumers of anime, games, manga, and other media that enjoy them for very particular reasons.

These reasons may not coincide with traditional reasons such as quality of plot, story, narrative, gameplay, among other things. Rather, it is the presence of specific items (characters, tropes, and character characteristics, among other things) in these works. The more time devoted to these, the better it is.

We acknowledge that there is at least some truth in this, whether the consumer is an otaku or not. We then turn to the tradition of robot fandom, where there is a tremendous amount of data to explore, as can be found in online encyclopedias such as Mecha Anime Headquarters.

This site is an attempt to look into such database units, accumulate data based onhow they are appreciated (noted here via tags), and perhaps make meaningful analyses later on.

What for? For foppery, for whim, and for applying concepts from literary criticism and academic scholarship on what is obviously a matter of significant interest to us and fans of robots in Japanese media.

Submissions are welcome and encouraged. Guidelines will follow.

This site is brought to you by schneider, pontifus, and myself (for now). It’s not fully up (the template isn’t updated, the comments system isn’t installed, the submissions system isn’t installed, but yeah this is happening.

Re: Melancholy and Awe: a spectrum of mecha viscera

I’m challenged by Pontifus’ post. Yeah I know it’s his personal thing, but since it’s shared in a blog post there’s got to be some kind of intention to contribute or even influence on his part.

Right now, I can’t come up with anything beyond “It can’t be this simple!”

Awe and Melancholia Axes

Well, I’ll leave it to him to do more with “3Q: Safe.” I understand it to be the kind of show where I as viewer is emotionally safe, that is safe from emotional peaks and depths.

I have seen my fair share of mecha anime, so I’ll see how my own list plots along these axes.
