It’s a mess, but not the way the detractors and the indifferent considered it as. On the fifth episode Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt delivered something either what people expected and hoped it would but found lacking, or something they would never credit this show of pulling off.
It’s easy to be taken in by the second half of the episode, with its dark, glum, and gritty story… that’s still feel-good in the end. What makes it remarkable is the visual style… there is nothing titillating fanservicey about it. It adds more to the case that PSG is anti-titillation.
There’s a high level of sexual content, humor, etc. But nothing in the delivery conventionally makes a fan fap to it. In fact, there’s a high level of disgust-provocation. In the first half of this episode this is taken to extreme ends when there was an explicit sex-scene between Panty and a man, but the act is wholly consisting of fingering each other’s noses and transferring boogers/mucus as stand-ins for vaginal fluid and semen.
Then it’s followed by the aforementioned dark story… a salesman down on his luck, your Japanese Billy Loman but without the bombast and mostly told in the office setting. Panty and Stocking themselves appear almost cameo-like, but their appearance is meaningful and effective.
It reminds me of some Batman, Spiderman, or even Spawn stories I used to read in high school. Yeah, it reminded me of these in a very good way.

Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt 03: is really cultural and intellectual masturbation. Think about it: all this referencing of popular and/or cult media works, it really allows us geeks to wank off to our “getting it,” and it’s effective because the joke is blatant and driven to its predictable extreme.
We know it’s coming, we groan while it’s coming, and when it came we aren’t really fulfilled … and maybe we feel a little (or a lot) dirty for having indulged ourselves with it.
Personally, I think it’s brilliant.

I lack the vocabulary to articulate how brilliant I think Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt episode 2 is. Both shorts are beyond what I expected after my impressions of the first episode.
It’s one thing to mash up a pastiche of pop-culture meta, but I feel a steady, knowing hand at the helm of each short. The use of montage makes each part feel chock-full of content, as well as allowing the episode (particularly Sex and the Daten City) to have global scope.
Also, Panty is consistently an irredeemable narcissistic slut who is out to get her little sister. This makes the show even more interesting and ballsy than it already is.
Lastly, I noticed in both second halves of the first two episodes, Garterbelt doesn’t make an appearance. I wonder if this trend will hold.

The verdicts are already starting to come in on Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt. If there were a consistent way everyone wrote the name of the show in their tweets, you could probably do a nice little search to find that 90% of them mention The Powerpuff Girls, or at least say something about…
I think it’s sad that no one who watches this will have seen Dead Leaves, Imaishi’s directorial work before Gurren Lagann that’s exactly like PantyStocking. Oh, newbie fans…
I remember when PPG came out, btw, because I obsessively watched cartoon network throughout my entire childhood. I do think it’s funny to say a show is like a western cartoon and cite PPG when PPG was all about being like anime. As for whether it’s come full circle, well, it already happened with PPGZ in that case…
Ok digiboy. First off, I already said the bit about PPG being inspired by anime (and kaiju) so I hope you’re agreeing with me by saying that.
But is everyone who hasn’t seen Dead Leaves a newbie?
I don’t have any clever and humorous way of saying this, but I saw Evangelion before your balls dropped. And I’m pretty sure when I was watching Vampire Hunter D the first time you were still shitting your drawers.
Occasionally you get into a high horse kind headspace and need to get punched out of it, so… you’re welcome.
Lol I hope they aren’t since I haven’t seen Dead Leaves either.
Anime elitist hipster faggotry.
In other news, my daughter turned 9 months today and watched her first episode of anime on local television with me. The show: Shin Mazinger Z-Hen (dubbed in Tagalog). I watched the original Mazinger Z not much older than she is.
Now both of us can claim that we were watching robot anime even before we could walk. Not that we get to tell off the Digiboys of the world often.
