I had just completed (watching, and at times rewatching) all the Universal Century Gundam (Zeon conflicts) anime, and I feel kind of sad and just a little bit empty. Maybe because I was expecting some kind of rush, a pronounced sense of accomplishment.
But it’s just a lazy morning when my friends cancelled tennis, so I finally rewatched Char’s Counterattack, a show that I was very disappointed when I first saw a year ago. I’m not surprised that I love it now, and thoroughly enjoyed myself.
I think most importantly, I got past my resistance and aversion to the whole business about Newtypes, which, if indulged, can only lead to pronounced dissatisfaction with how the narratives are resolved (pretty often by a sudden manifestation of unstoppable power never revealed prior in the narrative: Kamille’s NT barrier/invincibility, Amuro’s NT magic to save everyone at the end of it all). Even in Gundam 00 (at this time the latest TV series) I had a beef with it’s use of the Trans-Am Burst.
I mention ‘had’ a beef. Yeah. It’s not so simple. I still don’t like magic dust/h4x/NT ex machina fixing the majority of the conflict at the ends of the narratives. I just forgive it, since it’s Gundam, and as a franchise it gives me a lot of good stuff to remember, a lot of good things to love.
So yeah, Gundam magic. It got me.
