Thanks to everyone who greeted! @bluemistanime @thesebzgal @schneiderheim @vucub_caquix @lelangir @PantherRH @MyssaRei @Kherubim2k I remember the first time I updated twitter with a message saying that my wife @Alecon could be preggers. We’ve been trying for a year and a half at that time so I was afraid that it was either a fluke or a troll LOL. But I did update later on that I really did...

Anime Party and Sampling Many First Episodes
In the Philippines, Christmas season starts ridiculously in September, so a Christmas Party in late November is not too weird by our timetables. Last year us anime and manga fans (and bloggers) had it in TheSpaceCandy’s house. This year we held it at my place.  We watched a bunch of first episodes so as to introduce each other to different shows. Many of these I’ve already seen...

Criticism is not an (Ranka) attack
I want to repeat/document/archive/share what I said to this fan here: Listen, I’m no authority (as in certifications and what not) on being a fan, but I believe that being a fan ISN’T about believing your idol is infallible. I love Ranka despite all the shit she’s given as a character, and all the hate she’s given by the fans. This is what I believe is a great manifestation of being a fan....

Panty & Stocking and Messing With Expectations
It’s a mess, but not the way the detractors and the indifferent considered it as. On the fifth episode Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt delivered something either what people expected and hoped it would but found lacking, or something they would never credit this show of pulling off. It’s easy to be taken in by the second half of the episode, with its dark, glum, and gritty...

Prudishness and Deviance: Sexual Content in Anime
monday, october 25, 2010 2038h
owen s: incest is one of the hallmarks of anime
pretty sure Japan overdoes it compared to TV/movies in UK/US
ghostlightning: moar like, anime has for the longest time
owen s: a tradition of incest? haha
ghostlightning: indulged in titillating fetishes
and incest is just one of them
owen s: true true
ghostlightning: this time
loli incest
lololol
but yeah
owen s: no she's not even loli wtf
isn't she like highschool
doujins have consistently illustrated her with breasts
ghostlightning: let me tell you what i think
owen s: Sakura Kinomoto is loli
ok
ghostlightning: first, 11 year olds start budding breasts
i've had schoolmates
not too rare
owen s: she's 14
that's too old for shin
ghostlightning: i'm saying breasts aren't too big an issue here
the thing is
many of these 'older' characters
are depicted deliberately in a loli style
they are made to look younger than they are
owen s: looooooool i have got him
ghostlightning: which to me, is just as indicative of the fetish for loli
you can have a bazillion year old character
owen s: but loli is a specific fetish
ghostlightning: but she is attractive to otaku
owen s: you can't just say "evokes loli-esque" and directly equates it to loli
the ephebophilia thing is still valid
ghostlightning: because she looks like a little girl
owen s: it's not some dichotomy between lolis and milfs in anime!
little girls don't have hips
this is how all teenage girls in anime look like wtf
ghostlightning: ephebophilia is a peculiar thing
because it was quite normal for 15 year olds to marry until sometime in the 20th century
i am attracted to teenagers
no sense in denying such
owen s: I see
ghostlightning: but pre-teens, despite manifestations of puberty
squick me out
owen s: wait what
so wth is "teen" then
ghostlightning: teen is 13+
owen s: yes so she is a teen
wtf
ghostlightning: i remember fapping to teenagers when i was a teenagers
(lol the humbert humbert defense)
owen s: I dunno I think a lot of people seem to just tar everything with the same brush and can't even tell anymore
what's loli and what's not
ghostlightning: but I've no doubt that this isn't deviant
owen s: we're still talking about oreimo right
ghostlightning: you see, 18 as a legal age
is arbitrary
it is a matter of policy, and not nature
informed by mostly religious morality
that said, it is also fair to say, that the laws protect these youths who are more vulnerable to
assault or harassment from adults
who cannot defend themselves or redress themselves on the same terms
ergo the state provides them rights and protection
i think this is fair
but it is also not natural
so do I disagree with the moral grounds? no
but do I understand them? yes
i sympathize with the moral grounds against underage sexualization by adults
but i do not think it is unnatural for adults to lust after teenagers
it is not deviant in my eyes
now, to anime
owen s: eheheh I hope you never have to give this speech to your wife for whatever reason
ghostlightning: the little sister is indeed a teenager
but in many ways (I suspect) she acts like a little girl
when she isn't acting like an otaku
a male otaku
so the tone indeed is titillating, and plays to the loli fetish, on top of the ephebophilia fetish
it isn't just one thing
owen s: should make this into a post imo
but I get your point
ghostlightning: revolutionary girl utena is ironically easier to forgive, because you know it is fucking with you

If you see an anime version of this, hit me up on twitter. It feels great how I’ve seen almost everything and I really mean almost everything in this clip. It sort of confirms how outside of robots, I really am a big fan of swordplay in media. I think a clip from The Last Samurai should’ve been here. Ah well, no mind.

ghostlightning: One of the pleasures in writing about anime and manga is when readers discover something to enjoy in what you enjoy (therefore recommend). However, the nature of attacking what you enjoy, belongs in another dimension of fandom. See the terrible behavior of the Gundam fandom… The money quote: Basically, when you express a negative opinion on something, you may be...

scarletmonochrome: cincobajeena: scarletmonochrome: cincobajeena: The verdicts are already starting to come in on Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt. If there were a consistent way everyone wrote the name of the show in their tweets, you could probably do a nice little search to find that 90% of them mention The Powerpuff Girls, or at least say something about… I think it’s sad that no...

Courage Punch: Don't Move →
couragepunch: This is something by way of an extremely belated response to a post on Ha Neul Seom. In his 2009 post gaguri contrasted Japan and America in terms oF animation style - dividing them into ‘modernist’ and ‘classical’ - the expressive and the realistic, if that’s not dumbing it down too much. On… Actually, the money quote is this: It’s perhaps because of this inherent...

Emotional Investment in Anime & Manga
I got really interested in an ongoing twitter conversation between some friends regarding emotional impact of anime they’ve seen. Like the people involved in the conversation so far, I put a lot of myself in the media I consume. Sometimes however, I don’t stay engaged. Rightly or wrongly I often credit that to the ability of the work in question to keep me so. More often than not I...

Re: I Can Hear the Sea (reviewed by Kimaguresan) →
I’ve found it strange how I ended up loving this film so much — my most favorite anime film ever despite how small the story is, how quiet the whole affair is. It’s certainly divergent from my core tastes, but I suppose it reminds me of my freshman year in high school: not in the sense of having similar circumstances with the characters. Rather, in how I read similar, first love...

The Consumption of Opinions (Reviews and Ratings)
Why should these matter for us consumers? Just thinking out loud after a few exchanges with friends on twitter, I attempt to figure out the utility of these things. Objective #1: Selection You need to watch something new (or read something). If at this point you don’t have a community around you that have a good sense of what you enjoy (who will directly recommend items for you), then...

I’m challenged by Pontifus’ post. Yeah I know it’s his personal thing, but since it’s shared in a blog post there’s got to be some kind of intention to contribute or even influence on his part. Right now, I can’t come up with anything beyond “It can’t be this simple!” Well, I’ll leave it to him to do more with “3Q:...

At this point however, it’s still largely conjecture on my part. Here’s what I have to go by: About dysfunction, here’s how it usually plays out: Characters are good, functioning, and at times amazing individuals. But, …they are terrible together/they bring out the worst in each other. The relationships are either what holds them back in life, or the things that are missing in...
